In the beginning ...

In the beginning were the Highlands, and discerning walkers saw the Highlands and said "Eeeee but these are good!" (or variants thereof, in their own particular dialect or accent). And even those that had not the faintest idea how to pronounce any of the place names liked walking there.

And so it was that in 1980, a group of 80 or so walkers (including one lady called Sarah, who was later to become a good friend of mine) said "Why don't we take three weeks and walk all the way across, and call it the Ultimate Challenge, because nobody will ever be mad enough to do such a thing again?"

Which is what they did.

Only, they all enjoyed it so much, that when word got around all manner of folk wanted to come and join them. And it has happened every year since. (But Sarah has only ever done it the once.)
